Born in a very humble background of a middle
class family, he had an inclination for volunteering from a very young age. His
formal induction in social service started as a ‘Pracharak’(organizer) of
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a socio-cultural organization, dedicated to
the service of the nation. After serving in the RSS for about a decade and a
half, he entered mainstream politics in 1987 with joining the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), a national leading political
party of India. Owing to his excellent organizing capabilities, he was
designated on the level of General Secretary of the Gujarat unit within a year.
BJP was then a strong opposition party. Between 1988 and 1995, Namo
successfully carried out the necessary ground work for making ‘Gujarat BJP’ the ruling party of the
state and hence was recognized as a ‘master strategist’.
In 1995, he was made the National
Secretary of the party and was in charge of five major states in India– a rare
distinction. Promoted as the General Secretary (Organization), in 1998, he
revamped the party organization in many states and also served as the
spokesperson at the national level, till being entrusted the role of leading
Gujarat in October 2001.
As the longest serving Chief
minister of Gujarat, he has proved that “Good Governance is also Good
Politics”. Not only that, he has been a trend setter in the paradigm shift from
appeasement politics to developmental politics.
He works incessantly for Gujarat,
but his mantra is Gujarat's growth for India's growth.
About Me
He is the Chief Minister of Gujarat since
October 2001, under his leadership his party has won two Assembly elections
with massive majority in 2002 and 2007 and several local body elections at
various levels.
His first task as the CM was the
challenge of Earthquake reconstruction and rehabilitation (post Bhuj earthquake
2001) which he knobed so fabulously that it fetch him international recognition
and awards. The way Kutch has developed today, is a remarkable event in the
history of Gujarat
He made Gujarat the preferred
global destination for investors by providing the requisite infrastructure in
form of power, roads, ports etc conducive policies and initiatives like Vibrant
Gujarat Global Investors Summit held every two years are the additional points.
At the same time, he worked for the all round development of the state and
introduced innovations in governance in sectors like water management,
agriculture, energy, girl child education, maternal and infant mortality rate,
human resource development, setting up evening courts, effective interaction
between farmers, scientists and government, grievance redress etc. known as A
master strategist, he has now institutionalized many initiatives which are now
a part of routine government functioning. The result is : Gujarat today not
only leads the nation’s growth with highest GDP but also has the highest
agriculture growth and has taken strides of development in various social
sectors.
While he has Launched a number of
visionary world class projects like the Special Investment Regions, Gujarat
International Finance-Tech City (GIFT), Kalpasar Dam, Statue of Unity, Mahatma
Mandir etc to name a few, he has also introduced novel ways of grassroots
delivery like Garib Kalyan Melas, Apno Taluko Vibrant Taluko, Vanbandhu Kalyan
etc.
